The Mail / Autumn 2012

The Mail / Autumn 2012

20 Years celebrating food and wine

When Aussie expat journalist and 2012 Melbourne Food & Wine Legend, Terry Durack listed Royal Mail Hotel's "Taste of Place" festival event in his top 5 events to attend in 2012, we knew we were on the money.

An intimate group of food and wine lovers joined Dan Hunter and his team visiting some of the producers who regularly appear on our menus. After sheep cheese tastings at Grampians Pure, a visit to the sties at Greenvale meats and a tipple at Enigma Variations, guests were treated to a personal tour of the Hotel's kitchen garden followed by lunch in the Bistro.

A rare opportunity to spend one on one time with our Executive Chef along with the chance to see, up close and personal, how our producers milk, feed and ferment what eventually ends up on your plate or in your glass.

Earlier on in the month, Dan joined a feast of local and international chef's including David Chang, Brett Graham, Claus Henriksen and Peter Gilmore at the Langham Melbourne Masterclass. Presenting ‘Journey of a Dish', Dan shared his food philosophy and the importance he places on knowing where your food comes from.

Reconnecting producers and consumers

Royal Mail Hotel features in a great new book produced by The Locavore Edition, ‘A Field Guide to Victorian Produce'. A comprehensive guide to Victoria's regional produce, the Guide's aim is to make it easy for people to access quality produce from their food region and to enjoy regional food tourism by going direct to the source.

With a number of regional producers from the Guide showcased at the Hotel, the Royal Mail Hotel makes a strong commitment promoting local produce.

"We don't feel like we can produce beautiful food without knowing where it comes from," says Dan Hunter.

"It lends a story to your food as well; I think people are interested in the journey the food takes before it gets to the table".
